Dictionary of semiotics
and narratives of cinema
and television
Abstract: this article-homage to Algirdas Greimas aims to
highlight the contribution of the Dictionary of semiotics
(Semiotique, Dictionnaire raisonne de la théorie du langage,
Greimas-Courtés) to narrative theory and its applications,
including, the theories of cinema and television. In narrative
theory two well-defined fields can be distinguished: the
narratological theory proper as a reference science – for
example, from Aristotle to Greimas, through Propp, Bajtin,
Todorov, Barthes, Genet – and the narrative theories applied
to literature, cinema and television. In this work, we relate
some of the key entries of the Dictionary of semiotics with
film and television narrative.
Keywords: Greimas; Dictionary; Semiotics; Film and
Television Narratives.
